New Braunfels came alive with vibrant colors, music, and tradition during its Dia de los Muertos Festival on October 18. Hosted downtown, the event was a celebration of Mexican heritage, drawing thousands of attendees to honor loved ones, enjoy cultural performances, and immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere.
The festival showcased the beautiful traditions of Dia de los Muertos, with a community altar (ofrenda) at the heart of the event. By the end of the night, it was filled with photographs honoring deceased loved ones, flowers, candles, and favorite foods.
Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed live music, folkloric dance performances, and mariachi bands that brought the event to life. The festival also featured local artisans and vendors selling handmade crafts, jewelry, and traditional Dia de los Muertos decorations, and food trucks offered a variety of dishes.
A highlight of this year’s festival was the Dia de los Muertos Art Contest, which invited local students to submit artwork reflecting the themes of remembrance and cultural heritage. The contest, sponsored by local businesses and organizations, featured several winners:
Local high school seniors were also recognized at the festival for the 2024 recipients of the New Braunfels Hispanic Business Alliance scholarship, receiving a $1,000 scholarship to support their future education.
The 2024 Dia de los Muertos Festival in New Braunfels marked another successful year. A big thank you to this year's sponsors:
